The journey
Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater carry the wildlife. In between sits Lake Eyasi, where the Hadzabe still hunt with bow and arrow and the Datoga work iron by hand. You go out with them at their hour, not yours.
A word on how we do this. Community visits are arranged directly with the families involved, who are paid properly and can say no on the day. If a morning does not happen, we tell you why rather than staging a replacement.
Day by day
Day 1
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you the short distance to your hotel in Arusha. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight and settle in before the safari begins in the morning.

Day 2
Driven south-west after breakfast into Tarangire, reaching camp for lunch and out for an afternoon game drive along the river among the elephant herds and baobabs. In the dry season the park draws big concentrations of game to the water, and it makes a gentle, unhurried first day before the culture and the crater. Where your camp is set up for it, a guided night drive can be added — one of the few northern parks that allow them — for the nocturnal animals a day drive never shows you.

Day 3
A morning game drive in the park, then a drive west to Lake Eyasi through country most safaris never touch — dry, big and quiet, the Rift wall rising along one side. The lake sits in the valley below, and the afternoon is a gentle introduction to the communities you will spend tomorrow with. The Datoga, whose blacksmiths still work metal by hand into arrowheads and jewellery, are often visited here, a first quiet contact before the earlier start to come.

Day 4
Out before dawn with Hadzabe hunters who set the pace and the route entirely — one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples in Africa, and a morning that asks you to keep up and keep quiet rather than watch a staged performance. You walk as they hunt, following whatever the day offers. Later, a visit to a Datoga homestead nearby. This is cultural time done properly: arranged directly with the families, on their terms, with consent, and paid fairly rather than packaged.

Day 5
A drive north through the farming town of Karatu and up to the Ngorongoro rim, with time along the way in a Maasai community in the highlands — pastoral life lived at its own pace, cattle and grazing and daily routine, rather than a staged roadside stop. It is a gentler cultural encounter than the morning with the Hadzabe, and a fitting last one. The crater opens beneath you as you reach the rim in time for the evening light.

Day 6
Descend at first light onto the crater floor for a half day among the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa — and your best chance of black rhino anywhere in Tanzania — before the climb back out and the drive to Arusha for your onward flight. Time permitting, the Olduvai Gorge museum, where some of the earliest human remains were found, sits just off the route out and ties the wildlife and the culture of the trip together.
