What it is actually like
The short version
About half an hour by tarmac. The most accessible park in northern Tanzania by a wide margin.
4,566 m, Tanzania’s second highest mountain, and a serious acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro.
Established 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park, expanded and renamed in 1967.
Over 450 species, and the best place in Tanzania to watch black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Game drives, guided walks, canoeing on Small Momella Lake, horseback treks and the Meru climb.

What you will see
The park’s signature. Black-and-white colobus in the forest canopy, and their guttural territorial calls carrying through the trees.
Unusually numerous here, and a large part of why the Momella grasslands look the way they do.
Common in Ngurdoto Crater, watched from viewpoints on the rim. Vehicles do not descend into it.
Present but not often seen, more likely on the forest edges than in the open.
The Momella Lakes each carry different algae and different colours, and draw both lesser and greater flamingo.
None, which is precisely why walking and canoeing are permitted. That trade is the park’s whole character.
When to go
Dry, clear and the best chance of seeing both Meru and Kilimanjaro from the same viewpoint.
Warm and green, with good birding as migrants arrive. Comfortable for walking.
The long rains. Lush and empty, but tracks need four-wheel drive and the mountain is often hidden.

Getting there
Half an hour on tarmac to Ngongongare Gate, the main entrance for game drives.
Around 35 km from Kilimanjaro International, which makes it an ideal first or last day rather than a wasted transfer.
The north-eastern entrance, and the starting point for the Momella Lakes, canoeing and the Mount Meru ascent.
Good to know
Hiking is booked at a gate, a fee is payable online, and an armed ranger accompanies every walk. It cannot be decided on the spot.
Higher and greener than the other northern parks. Bring a layer, even in the dry season.
No lion, no rhino, and leopard are very rarely seen. Come for the landscape, the walking and the monkeys.
Three nights, an armed ranger, porters and a knife-edge crater rim. It is not a warm-up walk, whatever the brochures imply.
Under-twelves are not permitted above 3,000 m, which rules out the Meru summit for younger families.
Vehicles stay on the rim. The crater floor is left to the buffalo and the warthog.
