Destination · The Rift Valley
A shallow soda lake beneath an active volcano, and the only place in East Africa where lesser flamingos reliably breed.
What it is actually like
The short version
Roughly 57 km long and 22 km wide, and under three metres deep. Its edges move a great deal with the season.
Five to six hours by road, much of it rough. This is a detour, not a stop on the way to somewhere else.
East Africa’s only regular breeding site for lesser flamingos — a population representing around three quarters of the world’s total.
The world’s only active carbonatite volcano. Maasai call it the Mountain of God.
At Engare Sero, roughly four hundred preserved human footprints, dated to somewhere between 5,000 and 19,000 years old.
Not a national park. It falls under a wildlife management area, so fees are considerably lower than TANAPA parks.
What is there
In numbers that run to the millions in a good year. They do not breed every year, and skip it entirely when conditions are wrong.
Climbed overnight to reach the crater rim at sunrise. Steep, loose underfoot and genuinely hard — not a hike to underestimate.
A guided walk of about forty-five minutes up the Ngare Sero gorge to a plunge pool you can swim in. The best relief from the heat here.
This is working pastoral land rather than a park, and the community relationship is central to visiting well.
Beyond the flamingos, a few hundred species use the lake and its grasslands, including waterbirds of global importance.
Even in peak season this corner feels remote. That is most of the reason to come.
When to go
Dry and accessible, and the best window for both flamingo viewing and climbing Lengai.
Hot, with rain possible. The lake fills and the flamingo picture changes quickly from week to week.
The long rains. Roads can become impassable and a visit cannot be planned with any confidence.
How long to stay
Getting there
Five to six hours from Arusha, or a shorter run down from the Ngorongoro highlands. Rough in places and slow throughout.
The route through Loliondo links Natron to the northern Serengeti, which makes it a genuine addition to a migration trip rather than a there-and-back detour.
Multi-day walking routes run down from the Ngorongoro highlands to the lake, guided and arranged in advance.
Good to know
Daytime temperatures here are among the highest in northern Tanzania. Activities happen early and late, not in the middle of the day.
They breed erratically, depending on rainfall. Anyone promising you the spectacle on fixed dates is guessing.
Roughly six hours up on steep, loose ground, overnight, in the dark. Fitness matters more than experience.
Strongly alkaline and often above forty degrees. It is not a swimming lake; the gorge pool is.
Camps rather than lodges. Comfortable enough, but nobody comes here for the rooms.
A large-scale soda ash project was blocked in 2025 after long opposition on conservation grounds. The lake’s protection is not settled.
The journeys
Natron is not on our standard routes. It suits travellers with time who want a few days well away from the circuit, and we build it in on request.
