The journey
Tarangire for its elephant herds and ancient baobabs, the Serengeti for space and big cats, and the Ngorongoro Crater for the densest wildlife in Africa. We keep two nights in the Serengeti rather than one, because a single night there means a day mostly spent driving.
The route works year-round. Between January and March the southern plains fill with calving herds; from June the migration moves north and the dry season concentrates game around the rivers.
Day by day
Day 1
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you the short distance to your hotel in Arusha. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight and settle in before the safari begins in the morning.

Day 2
Driven south-west into Tarangire after breakfast, arriving for lunch and an afternoon game drive along the river, the park’s dry-season lifeline, where elephant families gather beneath the baobabs. It is a quieter park than the ones that follow — a gentle way to find the rhythm of a safari. Where your camp is set up for it, a guided night drive can be added, one of the few northern parks that permit them, for genets, civets and the occasional leopard.

Day 3
A long but genuinely beautiful drive west, climbing over the Ngorongoro highlands and dropping onto the plains of the Serengeti, with game viewing as you enter in the afternoon. The scale changes here — the horizon opens and the driving becomes part of the experience rather than a transfer. If you would rather trade the road for the air, the drive can be replaced with a short light-aircraft hop into the central Serengeti, buying most of a day back for game viewing.

Day 4
A full day in the central Seronera valley, the richest year-round game area in the Serengeti — lion on the kopjes, leopard along the river courses, cheetah out on the open grass — with lunch taken in the bush to keep you out through the best light. This is the classic day to add a dawn hot-air balloon flight: lift-off at first light, an hour drifting low over the plains, and a champagne breakfast where you land. It is booked early in your stay so a spare morning remains if the weather turns.

Day 5
A slow morning drive out of the Serengeti with game viewing en route, then a climb through the highlands to the Ngorongoro rim by late afternoon, with the caldera opening beneath you at sunset. For those who would rather stretch their legs, the highlands around the rim are among the few places walking is permitted — a guided rim walk or the short hike into Olmoti Crater can be arranged with a Maasai guide and a ranger.

Day 6
Descend at first light onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for a half day among the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa, and the best chance of black rhino you will get anywhere in Tanzania. On the climb out there is time, if you wish, for the Olduvai Gorge museum — the ‘cradle of mankind’, forty-five minutes from the rim — before the drive back to Arusha for your onward flight.
