The journey

One park, properly, instead of three in passing

The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti costs the better part of two days there and back. Flying buys those days back and spends them where the animals are. You land on a airstrip in the middle of the park and are game viewing within twenty minutes.

Offered at the luxury level only. A fly-in itinerary works because the camps are small and well placed, and that is not something the mid-range tier can honestly deliver on three nights.

Day by day

How the five days run

Showing

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you the short distance to your hotel in Arusha. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight and settle in before the safari begins in the morning.

Stay: Arusha lodge or hotel ·  Dinner

Day 2

Arusha and the short hop north

Met on arrival and taken straight to the airstrip for the late-morning flight into the Serengeti — the whole point of a fly-in, trading a long day on the road for an afternoon already among the wildlife. The plains reveal themselves slowly from the air: the scale of them, the herds moving across the grass, the light shifting as you descend. Game viewing on the drive from the airstrip to camp, arriving as the afternoon light softens and the animals begin to move.

Day 3

Full day on the plains

Out at first light with a packed breakfast, following wherever the herds and the guides say the action is. A full day in the richest game country the Serengeti offers, unhurried and led by what you find rather than a fixed route. This is the natural morning to add a dawn balloon flight over the plains — an hour drifting low over the grass at sunrise, then a champagne breakfast where you land — booked early so a spare morning remains if the weather turns.

Day 4

Deeper into the park

A second full day, moving further out from the busier central circuit into quieter country where you can go a long stretch without seeing another vehicle. That solitude is much of what a fly-in buys you. There is time out of the vehicle too, if you wish — a short guided nature walk from camp to read the smaller signs a drive skips over, or a bush sundowner as the day ends, both easily arranged where your camp offers them.

Day 5

Morning drive, then the flight south

A last morning drive on the way to the airstrip, making the most of the light before the flight back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro for your onward connection. A deliberately short trip, built to put you in the very best of the Serengeti without the long road days that usually bracket a driving safari — ideal when time is tight but you are not willing to trade away the quality of the wildlife.
