The journey
Everything here bends towards first and last light. Early breakfasts or none at all, late returns, and camps chosen for how close they sit to the good ground rather than for their spa. Two parks in seven days, not four.
Practicalities: a row of seats each so you can shoot both sides, beanbags provided, and charging in the vehicle. Tell us what you shoot and we will match the guide — birds and big cats are not the same skill.
Day by day
Day 1
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you the short distance to your hotel in Arusha. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight and settle in before the safari begins in the morning.
Stay: Arusha lodge or hotel · Dinner
Day 2
A flight to the plains to save a driving day, landing in time for an afternoon session in the Serengeti timed for the low, warm light photographers travel for. The whole trip is built around the first and last hours of the day, every day, and arriving by air rather than road means you are working the same evening you land. Your guide learns quickly what you are after — how close, how long, how much patience — so the next days can be shaped around it.

Day 3
Two sessions with the harsh middle of the day spent off the road — leopard and lion along the Seronera river courses at dawn, the open grass and its cats at dusk. The point is not to rush between sightings but to work each one properly, waiting for behaviour and light to line up. For a different angle entirely, a dawn balloon flight puts you above the plains in the best light of the day, a perspective on the herds you cannot get from the ground, and a favourite with photographers.

Day 4
If a pride, a hunt or a kill is worth staying with, we stay with it — all morning if the light and the behaviour justify it. This is the day the private vehicle truly earns its place: no shared schedule, no other guests wanting to move on, no leaving before the moment resolves. Your guide reads the animals and positions the vehicle for the light and the clean background; the ground and your patience do the rest. Slow, deliberate photography rather than a checklist of species.

Day 5
Moving to quieter ground with far fewer vehicles in the frame — the single biggest difference between a good wildlife photograph and a great one is often just what else is in the shot. Out here you can work a subject without a line of other cars arriving. There is time out of the vehicle too, a short guided walk for the small subjects — birds, insects, detail and texture — that a long lens from a vehicle usually skips over entirely.

Day 6
Your guide picks the ground on the morning itself, based on what moved overnight and what the light is doing — a full day led entirely by animal activity rather than a fixed route. This is the way wildlife photography actually works when you are not chasing a checklist: you go where the pictures are, you wait, and you let the day unfold. Some of the strongest frames of a trip come from days with no plan beyond following what the ground offers.

Day 7
A working drive out of the plains with game viewing all the way, arriving at the Ngorongoro rim in time for the evening light over the caldera. The big descent comes tomorrow, so this afternoon is for the long view from the rim — the whole crater laid out below, the light going gold and then blue — and for resting the shutter finger before an early start on the floor.

Day 8
Down onto the crater floor before the gates get busy and the light goes flat — the first hours after dawn are the ones that matter here, so you are moving early. The floor holds the densest wildlife in Africa in a contained space, which means subjects at close range, and it is the best chance of black rhino in the crater anywhere in Tanzania, before the climb out and the drive back to Arusha.
